Rob Palmer, PhD - River Ecology

Rob is the founder director of Nepid Consultants CC. He has a BSc in Zoology from the University of Cape Town, and a PhD in Aquatic Ecology from Rhodes University, South Africa. He has over 20 years’ experience in aquatic systems and specialist knowledge of river regulation and river ecology. He is a member of the Advisory Committee on the Safety of Dams, a registered Environmental Assessment Practitioner (No 0080/06), a member of the SA Council for Natural Scientific Professions (No 400108/95), and an accredited SASS5 biomonitoring practitioner.

Warren McCleland, Diploma [Nature Conservation] - Terrestrial Ecologist

Warren has 14 years’ experience surveying flora and fauna throughout southern and south-central Africa, particularly for Environmental Impact Assessments relating to mines, water impoundments and large housing developments. He co-authored the "Field Guide to the Trees & Shrubs of Kruger National Park & Mpumalanga", published in 2002, and is currently working on a field guide to the Wildflowers of the Lowveld. He is a member of the Mpumalanga Plant Specialist Group, Bird Life South Africa and the Herpetological Association of Africa.

Shael Koekemoer, MSc - Diatom Specialist

Shael has an MSc in Ecological Remediation from the University of the North-West, Potchefstroom. Since 2005 she has been specialising in diatom based water quality assessments of aquatic systems. She is a member of Koekemoer Aquatic Sciences (KAS), which is a closed corporation specialising in aquatic sciences, primarily aquatic health and fisheries sciences biomonitoring of river systems.

Robin Clanahan, BSc - Civil Engineer

Mr Clanahan is a civil engineer specialising in the water sector. He was the first CEO of the bi-national Komati Basin Water Authority set up to manage the first phase of the development of the upper Inkomati River Basin. Mr Clanahan has considerable experience in irrigation, dam design, water reticulation and treatment, hydrology, financial and administrative management, industrial pollution assessment, housing, roads and other infrastructure. He has worked in and been a director of various engineering companies and also practiced as a private consultant since graduating in 1962.

Gerhard Diedericks, MSc - Aquatic Health

Gerhard has a diploma in forestry, and over 10 years’ experience in forestry management, and specialist knowledge of aquatic biomonitoring and environmental management. Since 1998 he has been implementing water quality biomonitoring programmes for the forest industry in selected catchments draining commercial forestry areas in southern Africa. He is currently the provincial auditor for biomonitoring practitioners in Mpumalanga. He has been involved in various Environmental Impact Assessments, environmental evaluations, land rehabilitation planning and monitoring of surface water and groundwater quality.

Shaune Rogatschnig, BSc (Hons) - Environmentalist

Mrs Rogatschnig holds a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Management, and is also experienced in web design and Desktop Publishing. She has 12 years’ experience in the environmental field, working as an assistant and coordinator on a variety of environmental assessments for Doug Jeffery Environmental Consultants in the Western Cape and Wandma Consulting Services in Mpumalanga. Shaune worked for Nepid Consultants for three years, and took up an associate position when she moved to Cape Town in 2006. She has completed an ArcGIS training module and subsequently worked on the mapping of Forestry Plantation and Fire Management Plans.

Peter Hawkes, BSc (Hons) - Terrestrial Entomologist

Pete holds a BSc (Hons) in Entomology from Rhodes University, where he majored in Entomology and Biochemistry. He has 12 years’ experience as an environmental consultant in South and Central Africa, focussing on insect biodiversity assessments, rehabilitation monitoring and conservation planning. He is registered as a Professional Natural Scientist (Zoological Science) (No 400411/04), and is also a life member of the Entomological Society of Southern Africa, the Botanical Society of South Africa, and a member of the International Association for Impact Assessment South Africa. He is the founder director of AfriBugs, a private consulting company focussing on arthropod biodiversity and conservation.

Delana Louw, BSc - Environmentalist

Delana holds a BSc in Nature Conservation. She has over 20 years’ experience in managing and coordinating environmental studies specifically related to Environmental Water Requirements. She has been closely involved in the design of most of the state-of-the art methods presently in use, and in their applications on a large number of rivers throughout southern Africa. In 2004 she was awarded the Woman of the Year (2004) award in Management and Policy by the South African Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. She is the founder director of Rivers for Africa eFlows Consulting (Pty) Ltd.

Stephen Mallory, MSc - Hydrologist

Stephen holds a Masters degree in Civil Engineering. He has 25 years’ experience in the water engineering field, most of which is in the field of water resources planning and modelling. Core competencies include the development of operating rules for dams, hydrological analysis, floodline determination, strategic water resource assessments, yield modelling, ecological water requirement assessments, and assessing fresh water flow requirements for estuaries. He is the founding member of IWR Water Resources, a company that specialises in water resources planning and modelling.

Patsy Scherman, PhD - Water Quality

Patsy holds a PhD in Biotechnology from Rhodes University. Her primary experience is in the field of environmental water quality and toxicology, and assessing river health using biological indicators. She has over 15 years’ experience in water quality, and has been actively involved in water quality aspects of Ecological Water Requirements. She has been a Professional Service Provider to the Resource Directed Measures Chief Directorate of the Department of Water Affairs on water quality and the Ecological Water Requirements (Reserve) since 2006. She is a founder member of Scherman Colloty & Associates.

Denis Tweddle, BSc - Fish Specialist

Denis holds a BSc in Marine Biology and Zoology from the University of Wales, Bangor. He has over 40 years’ experience in freshwater fish (including stock assessment, fisheries management, taxonomy, biodiversity conservation, fishing gear technology) in 14 countries in eastern, central and southern Africa. He has extensive knowledge of the fishes of the Zambezi, Malawi/East Coast systems and southern Congo rivers, and has been the fish specialist in several environmental assessments in the southern African region.
